Bored of wintery mountain pictures with blue skies and lots of white snow yet?
I thought I was. I mean I thought I was 100% over and done with winter too. It’s the start of April and the temperatures still drop to −10C (14F) in the mornings. Something is not quite right as calendar clearly indicates it should be spring.
But then Easter came along. And friend of mine took me up a mountain.
It’s not so long time ago when I was dreaming of getting another bite of adventure and this is what it was, one hundred percent. An adventure.
Starting off below the tree line you never know what you will find up at the top, or if you will even make it all the way there. The little passenger in the sledge might protest before you even get properly going, but this time my little miss Mini dreamed away for almost three hours as us mamas kept on climbing with our skis higher and higher.
The feeling when you reach the top is almost indescribable The surrounding mountains seem so close that you feel you could almost reach them if you just kept on going little longer. There is no sound. Just soft wind and the sun that warmly caresses any exposed skin, as you look for the perfect spot for an outdoor lunch. Loneliness, the good kind, that makes you feel very small in midst of the mountains settles in as you sit down to relax and take in the view.
And I have to admit, packed lunch has never tasted this good…
…especially with these mountain views to Jotunheimen serving as the backdrop for our outdoor feast. We were excitedly hoping to see some reindeer passing by, as the herders have moved the deer from Jotunheimen to these smaller mountains for Easter, to have some space and quietness from the hordes of skiers arriving to the more famous Jotunheimen mountains.
But even if there was no reindeer this time, we still had “kvikk lunsj”, the staple of Norwegian touring diet slightly resembling Kit Kat. Maybe not quite as remarkable as seeing hundreds of reindeer approaching in the mountains, but the sweet taste of chocolate always seems to but a smile on my face, nevertheless.
And the little one finally woke up at the top, just on time for some lunch and play on the snow. Happy to be out in the sun discovering the lichen and moss the reindeer had digger up on their own search for nourishment.
I can only say that I am still GLOATING, few days after this trip.
Maybe winter doesn’t have to end after all, I wouldn’t mind few more ski trips before the season changes…
And while plotting those new trips, happy belated Easter to everyone, at least here in Norway we are still enjoying a day off from the office today, hence a good opportunity to get the skis out again for a little trip this time, probably to the closest waffle café…!
